BOTW: Communications Conversations

The world of PR and social media is evolving everyday. And when it comes to giving the latest on new trends, innovations, and issues, Arik Hanson’s Communications Conversations definitely serves it up.

Arik is Principal of ACH Communications in Minneapolis and has an extensive background in PR, social media, and digital communications. You can usually depend on him to be in attendance at most of the industry events around the area and report back on them in his blog. He knows his stuff.

There’s a feature on Communications Conversations that I absolutely love called PR Rock Stars. There, Arik interviews people from across the country that are basically killing it in the communications world. He’s talked with PR pros, journalists, and media folks about what makes them great, their take on certain issues, and advice for other professionals out there.

Aside from the great content on his blog, I have to give him props for incorporating all kinds of interactive media into his posts. You’ll often find photos, videos, and other widgets that make his blog a lot more engaging and interesting to read. There are a lot of blogs out there that have yet to take that extra step to attract and retain readers (including mine!).

  • Founded Behind the Firewall chat with Rick Mahn. Held Thursday evenings from 8-9 p.m.

  • Co-founded blog with Allan Schoenberg, director of corporate communications for the CME Group

Thanks for shout and the kinds words. Really, I’m just a guy who write a blog about PR and social media. 😉

I do want to note one thing I think is important. If you’ll notice many of my posts and content focus on my community. PR Rock Stars, the innovator list, Rants N Raves. Even, the BTF chat. That’s not by accident. I think a good blog is really a community of like-minded people who discuss relevant industry issues and interesting topics. After all, isn’t that why we have comments? So many bloggers get caught up in the content pushing side of it. I tend to think the best bloggers are those who know and understand how to rally and engage their communities. People like Danny Brown, Valeria Maltoni and Mack Collier. Those are some of the people I respect and look up to as bloggers. I just try to learn from them and use similar approaches.

As my friend Amy Mengel says, “this isn’t rocket surgery” (one of my favorite quotes ever).

“I tend to think the best bloggers are those who know and understand how to rally and engage their communities.”

Precisely! As I start to really delve into social media tactics, it’s clear that those bloggers, companies, and brands who really get it are the ones creating conversations, asking questions, and provoking others to interact and share ideas. I think that’s why I find social media so fascinating. It’s not always about promoting a brand, but developing relationships and listening to thoughts from people a brand depends on.

Thanks for the comment, Arik! I look forward to continue learning more from your blog.
